In the nightly I've added SQL logging to output and also webserver logs, perhaps those would be helpful in debugging.

It would certainly need to be changed in the future (for the user/pass signature), but this brings existing functionality to another component, PLUS makes it more generic way of calling...

@d-Pixie you could use OpenID Connect (Oauth2) for GSuite for now. I second @lpar's suggestion of https://github.com/russellhaering/gosaml2 as having used it and crewjam's, I prefer ressell's.
