Display "Trending Communities/Countries" on the area leaderboards.
In addition to area ranking on the Community and Country Leaderboards, there is also the concept of "Trending Communities" served by get_trending_countries and get_trending_communities RPCs.
Trending is based on total activity (create, update, delete, comments) that occurred within a supplied period. The top 10 are returned and the score is the culmative number of activities.
Perhaps a Monthly Trending column that has a fire icon with a number that shows up for those 10 countries/communities that make the cut?
FYI: Those are internal RPCs used for monthly reports, they aren't supposed to be exposed to public via website. There is a reason they aren't documented. RPC is an admin/dev interface, anything facing the public should be first optimized of performance and user preferences
