FlexBE Chrome App EOL 2017

Open pschillinger opened this issue 8 years ago • 1 comments

As previously announced, for example here, support for the FlexBE Chrome App ends this year due to Google ending their support for Chrome Apps.

First, to keep you up-to-date, there has been another announcement recently (source):

Update on December 5, 2017: Chrome Apps will be removed from Chrome Web Store search & browse functions in mid-December 2017. Existing apps will continue to work and receive updates. The Chrome browser will continue to load packaged and hosted apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux beyond the previously announced deprecation timeline. Another update will be posted here when a new date for the Chrome Apps EOL on Windows, Mac, and Linux has been finalized.

This means that the FlexBE Chrome App should stay operational for the near future. However, this may change any time from next month on.

Regardless, FlexBE will officially transition away from the Chrome App by the end of this month. I pushed a branch deprecated/chrome_app, please switch over to this branch as soon as possible if you need to stay with the Chrome App beyond the end of this month. Otherwise, you can switch to the branch feature/flexbe_app any time if you are not using it already. The merge into master of this branch will happen at the end of this month. Instructions on how to switch are provided in this readme.

I will update this issue when the switch happens.

Switch has finally happened as described above. Instructions on the homepage and the tutorials are updated respectively.

In case you still use the Chrome app, please consider switching and let me know if there are still blockers for you. In case you use the feature/flexbe_app branch, please switch back to develop or master. These branches now contain the flexbe_app version and will be updated further.

Thank you for all the feedback on various topics related to the switch.
