Change term - scientificName usage comments

Open ianengelbrecht opened this issue 2 years ago • 3 comments

Term change

  • Submitter: Ian Engelbrecht @ianengelbrecht
  • Efficacy Justification (why is this change necessary?): Improve consistency in use of this term
  • Demand Justification (if the change is semantic in nature, name at least two organizations that independently need this term): Applies to any users of this term.
  • Stability Justification (what concerns are there that this might affect existing implementations?): Should improve consistency of usage of this term.
  • Implications for dwciri: namespace (does this change affect a dwciri term version)?: None

Current Term definition: https://dwc.tdwg.org/list/#dwc_scientificName

Proposed changes:

  • Usage comments (recommendations regarding content, etc., not normative): This term should not contain identification qualifications, which should instead be supplied in the IdentificationQualifier term. When applied to an Organism or Occurrence, this term should be used to represent the scientific name that was applied to the associated Organism in accordance with the Taxon to which it was or is currently identified. Names should be code-compliant where possible.

I fully support this change.

I think it should say that the name "...should be compliant to the most recent nomenclatural code".

Citations of the codes would not be harmful and some details would be useful.

We don't expect users to read the nomenclatural codes, so some hints at what it a code compliant name would really help users.
