Trait Data - Darwin Core Hour Input Form 2/7/2017 14:07:22
A user submitted this information via the Darwin Core Hour webform: Timestamp: 2/7/2017 14:07:22 Please provide a topic of interest: Anything to do with trait data. I am coming from the point of view of a PhD student and I may be able to use DwC to tag information I want to extract from the biodiversity literature about trophic interactions between species. Below I have put no as at the moment I don't really have any experience but I would be willing to participate if I find out I could use it and if I get enough expertise in the area. Are you capable of and interested in participating: No Who else would you recommend to participate in the presentation: What resources can you point to: Your name: Sandra Your email: [email protected]
The VertNet (http://vertnet.org/) crew, including @pzermoglio and @tucotuco have been "thinking traits" the past many months, and part of what we have delivered is a way to search trait data that is directly linked to observations and measurements taken primarily from specimens. You might want to check out more details here: http://blog.vertnet.org/post/150968616716/sizing-up-the-improved-vertnet-portal. And we even have a paper about this just published, which is the "long version" of the post. And you can see the VertNet trait searching in action on the advanced search functions on the VertNet portal (http://portal.vertnet.org/search).
The Encyclopedia of Life (http://eol.org/data_search) is also into trait data. We aggregate from a number of source types, but even summarized results in the literature can have enough contextual metadata that we have found it easiest so far to model them using occurrences. We are rebuilding our database this year, so this would be a good time to hear about how everyone else is modeling their trait data.
Hi Sandra, note that at the upcoming TDWG 2017 Conference, there will be an entire symposium on trait data. See: https://tdwgproceedings.pensoft.net/collection/25/ and scroll to Symposium 20: Traits - Data models, sources, vocabulary, interoperability and their presentation and discoverability via species information pages.
to @pzermoglio note the recent trait data workshop at Conference: Digital Data II. Not sure where you are going with this particular ticket, but perhaps this person would be interested in their discussions and slides?
