How to include synonyms for an identification in DwC?

Open seltmann opened this issue 4 years ago • 6 comments

I would like to include information about the synonymy of taxon names in a darwin core file that I am sharing. The file is to be included as specimens examined in a new species revision. What is the best way to include information about synonyms of the name?

I was considering simply put the information in http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/identificationRemarks or is there a better way?

Thanks!

Hi Katja,

Is it going to be a dataset based on a Taxon Core or on an Occurrence Core?

Cheers,

John

The dataset is based on Occurrence Core to include locality information and other information about the collecting event.

Although it may make sense to include both since it includes description of new species. Thanks, Katja

Hi @tucotuco I wanted to circle back about this. Our file contains these fields for 1145 specimens: occurrenceID,institutionCode, catalogNumber, sex, scientificName, typeStatus, recordedBy,kingdom, class, order, family, rank, scientificNameAuthorship, genus, specificEpithet, eventDate, verbatimEventDate, decimalLatitude, decimalLongitude, coordinatuncertantyinmeters, habitat, minimumElevationInMeters, maximumElevationInMeters, country,AssociatedTaxa, stateProvince, county, municipality, locationRemarks, samplingprotocol

And we would like to include information about the taxon synonyms for the 10 species in the study since one is a new species. Is there a preferred way to do this? Can this be done in the Occurrence Core?

Thanks! Katja

Hi @seltmann,

Sorry for the huge delay. Publishing through an Occurrence Core you could put the synonyms in previousIdentifications (https://dwc.tdwg.org/terms/#dwc:previousIdentifications), but even better in terms of richness would be to include an Identification History extension (https://tools.gbif.org/dwca-validator/extension.do?id=dwc:Identification). That would allow you to capture richer information about the names, if desired, but more importantly, one per row in the extension, and multiple rows per Occurrence, if necessary. Do either of those solution seem satisfactory?

@tucotuco yes, this is perfect. Thank you!

Reopening because we haven't turned the answer into documentation yer.
