Data Entry Setup - Darwin Core Hour Input Form 2/7/2017 14:03:58
A user submitted this information via the Darwin Core Hour webform: Timestamp: 2/7/2017 14:03:58 Please provide a topic of interest: How should my database data entry page best be setup for my specialization. I realize this might be a silly question as each institution will obviously have its own preference, but in a skeletal sense, what is the minimum information required? Are you capable of and interested in participating: Who else would you recommend to participate in the presentation: What resources can you point to: Your name: Your email:

This is not a silly question at all, but it is a tricky one to answer. Further discussion, with more information, is recommended. For example, are these specimen records? Observations? Fossils? Are there other interesting information associated (e.g., media)?
In general, the more that is captured, the more possible uses the data might be fit for. Also, in general, the data entry page should be optimized for the capture of data, not necessarily the sharing or cleaning of it. In that respect, think of Darwin Core as an ultimate target to fit into when sharing, but do not let it be an impediment to data capture or data management.
Document how Darwin Core can be useful in the database management system if used appropriately - make sure the concepts as exactly the same when a Darwin Core field name is used. Also say that using Darwin Core terms has the benefit of a community-wide understanding of the meaning. Also point out that it is imperative that the database management system be designed for day-to-day use, which may differ from community sharing.
