Format | Text |
Required | No |
Repeatable | Yes |
Constraints | Controlled vocabulary |
Examples | fluid_preserved , alcohol , formaldehyde , dried , dried_pinned , dried_pressed , mounted , microscope_slide , glycerin , gum_arabic , frozen , refrigerated , freeze_dried , mixed , no_treatment , known:withheld , unknown , papered/packaged |
Notes | Not intended to be used as the fossilization method. Use preservationMode for that. This field is intended to be use where a collection has a single or prominent preservationMethod. If the collection has multiple preservationMethods then this should be expressed elsewhere, such as in ObjectQuantity. We recommend the Arctos PART_PRESERVATION vocabulary (https://arctos.database.museum/info/ctDocumentation.cfm?table=CTPART_PRESERVATION). For herbarium sheets use 'dried_pressed'. If an alcohol collection uses mixed percentages use 'alcohol'. |

Mixed: Collection attributed to a collector, e.g. Darwin collected plants, animals, fish, etc.

I've updated the examples to include everything from BioCase
Here are controlled values from Arctos for preservation method: http://arctos.database.museum/info/ctDocumentation.cfm?table=CTPART_PRESERVATION
@qgroom A point on this part of the notes:
"If the collection has multiple preservationMethods then this should be expressed elsewhere, such as in ObjectQuantity"
If this is the case, within the data model you would still need to divide the CollectionDescription into two or more CollectionDescriptions which do have a single or predominant preservationMethod, as ObjectQuantity applies to the CollectionDescription, not the preservationMethod.
This should reflect the final stage of preservation and not the preparation steps.
what about sketchbooks, letters, diaries, paintings etc. (e.g. from expeditions/certain collectors)?
what about sketchbooks, letters, diaries, paintings etc. (e.g. from expeditions/certain collectors)?
Wouldn't they come under no_treatment
unless they were given a special preservation treatment?
The Paleo Digi group recommends that preservationMethod be included in the CD core terms. We advise clarifying the definition so it is clear that this term does not apply to fossil/taphonomic preservation, perhaps by adding "human" to the definition. A more appropriate term to capture natural/fossil preservation could be preservationMode (and used as a hybrid of preservationMode, preservationAlteration, and preservationModeSpecial from ABCD-EFG).
