Allow typing multi-line messages into the message box

Hangouts for Chrome uses Shift+Return to insert a new line into the message box without sending the message. Currently there is no way to do this in hangups.

Has any progress been made on this? Sending a new line itself is possible when using Hangups as a library or pasting text. However, it is impossible to do this when typing a message. Would it be possible to map \n to a new line, and have \\n print a single backslash n?
