The matio API actually was kept backward-compatible since release of v1.5.0 (spring 2012).

This current restriction is a real show-stopper. Unfortunately there is no other tool to automatically create release notes from a milestone.

Same here, but defining `Z_LARGE64` as preprocessor definition works for me. I was using VS2010 (from contrib/vstudio/vc10).
