Oniguruma alternative
Sadly, the Oniguruma project has ended. It's still a bit early, but we should start looking for alternatives (or consider removing it entirely in the future). I’m opening this issue to keep track of that.
That's disappointing, thanks for the heads up!
If no one takes over Oniguruma maintainership (I assume Ruby still needs a regex engine?), I'll consider switching to something like PCRE or TRE. Open to suggestions though!
Ruby switched from oniguruma to onigmo (a fork of oniguruma) in Ruby 2.0, released 24 February 2013.
With very few documented exceptions excepted, onigmo should provide a superset of of the functionality provided by oniguruma.
My recommendation would be to give onigmo a go.
I avoided Onigmo originally because Wikipedia says
Onigmo is no longer being updated
which seems roughly correct (no releases since 2019).
