On-screen Keyboard does not always appear after tapping the + button on a widget

I noticed that the on-screen keyboard does not reliably show up when I create a new task from a widget.

Steps to reproduce:

  • Create a Tasks widget on the home screen
  • Click the + button in the top right corner to create a new task

Expected behavior:

  • App starts in the "Create task" view
  • The "task name" field is focused
  • The on-screen keyboard shows up and I can start typing right away

Observed behavior:

  • App starts in the "Create task" view
  • The "task name" field is focused
  • The on-screen keyboard does not show up automatically. I have to tap the input field to make the keyboard appear.

The app does not show this behavior all the time, sometimes the keyboard shows up as expected. I could not make out a pattern yet, but I can force the buggy behavior by closing the Tasks app through the Android task switcher or force-closing it in system settings before tapping the + button on a widget.

I'm using a Pixel 6 with Android 15, Nova Launcher and the default Google keyboard.

I have the same issue after migrating from a Samsung Galaxy A32 to A56 (default OneUI launcher). Keyboard did show up on the older device and also always shows up when adding a task in the app (as opposed to the widget).
