How to contribute to major open source projects like React or Vue ?

Basically I wish to know how much of programming on should know in order to be able to contribute to mainstream open-source projects like Vue or React? And if one wants to get started with such a level of contribution in open-source, from where should he/she start learning? Consider he/she is having entry-level skills in web development.
