Insights on - "Worth of Open Source Contributions while one applies for an Opportunity."

Last month I got an opportunity to contribute to a project when I participated in Rails Girls Summer of Code. My main reason I participated was one. I found an interesting project that was needed to be build in react. I wanted to kick start my react journey, so I dived in. What I want to ask from you is - How much Open Source contributions are valued when one applies for a role in industry? Also, any tips when a student becomes part of an Open Source project and join a new community for first time.

I would really appreciate if I can get some insights on this by you or anyone in your network.
