15" gaze16 built-in display stuck at 144Hz

  • Model: gaze16-3060 w/15" display
  • BIOS version: 2021-09-30_14b8a6e
  • EC version: 2021-09-30_14b8a6e
  • OS: Pop!_OS 21.10

Trying to set the built-in display to a refresh rate lower than 144Hz in Gnome Control Center > Displays doesn't seem to have any effect, and display remains on 144Hz. This was reported in the context of some older games on Steam not playing properly above 60Hz.

Steps to reproduce

In any graphics mode,

  • Open Gnome Control Center > Displays
  • Set the refresh rate on the built-in screen to 60Hz
  • It says it's now 60Hz, but it's visibly still running at 144Hz

Expected behavior

Setting to 60Hz should make it run at 60Hz

Actual behavior

Display runs at 144Hz when set to 60Hz

Additional info

This was also tested on the kudu6 (15") and the 17" gaze16-3060-b, and 60Hz worked as expected when selected.

The user who first reported the bug said that an external 144Hz display on the same machine could be set to 60Hz, and the display would run at 60Hz as expected.
