Considering Linux?
An article that explains what Linux/FOSS is and why many people like us use it. Top level info about how the Linux ecosystem works would be helpful as well. Such as, what a desktop environment is, how it is largely an a la carte approach, and not all distros are made the same.
Will help write this up when back at work
Down to start this
Start writing then. :)
I would recommend starting with an outline.
Would something like this work for an outline?
- What Is Linux? (explain how it is a kernel and other things are built on top)
- Why should I switch?
- How does it differ from Windows? (could this be its own article?)
- Customization in Linux (link to your reworked article on customizing Pop)
- Gaming in Linux (link to gaming in pop)
- Price
The points I wanted to have featured are:
- What is the Linux Kernel?
- What are X11 and Wayland?
- What is a Desktop Environment?
- What are Pipewire and Pulseaudio?
- What is systemd
- I think "what is an init system" would be overkill, but mentioning that systemd is an init system, and there are others would be sufficient.
Any other Linux things? I wanted to illustrate how collaborative the Linux ecosystem is, and how there are a lot of shared software between distros. Basically, what we look for, or have looked for, when considering distros.
Also, on Zach's notes, making references to how GRUB and systemd-boot may differ may be a good idea as well. The simpler the article's references, for newcomers, the better imo.
Is there a timeframe for this article? If it's still being written when my workload slows down, I'm sure I can add a few points to this. And I also wouldn't mind creating a companion video collaboration to go along with the article, if the interest is there ;)
