add what to do if ppa for new release isn't out

On Ubuntu, switched to plucky 25

I went to update the system76 drivers and got errors:

The repository 'https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/system76-dev/stable/ubuntu plucky Release' does not have a Release file.

I don't expect you to have a valid ppa for non-stable upgrades, but it would be super helpful if you discussed this more on your docs. It just says to download the drivers to keep the system optimized and I'm trying. May find a solution elsewhere but I'm already two hours into sporadically scouring and not finding a hack to it. I was hoping on working not troubleshooting.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu

(Aside, wanted to see if 25 had an updated GNOME. (This is mainly because I have big monitors and Ubuntu's GUI sucks on using a dual monitor setup where the other monitor is bigger than the laptop. Either the monitor content looks huge or the laptop content looks tiny.)

There is no support for 25.04 in the repository:

It sounds like the issue opener was already aware it's not supported, @ahoneybun: "I don't expect you to have a valid ppa for non-stable upgrades..."

@mpstaton If your system's working without the driver app, then there's no need to spend hours trying to get it installed for "optimization." If your system isn't working correctly without the driver app, then you'd basically need to wait for us to package and release the driver app for the new version of Ubuntu. If you're an advanced user, then you can look at what the driver app's doing for your specific model and attempt to do those things manually (and/or try to compile the driver app yourself on the new Ubuntu version): https://github.com/pop-os/system76-driver/blob/505c22b7b8f0c6f45763cb623f3a3c89823a32cd/system76driver/products.py#L1131

We could probably add something to this effect to the docs.

I had the same issue, I found several sources, but could not workout which was the correct one for my machine, and I could not find any instructions on compiling. There was no in read me in the sources.

So you a are restricted to the pop os or Ubuntu LTS.

It works ok, but you don't get firmware updates

What is needed are A full explanation of what is in the driver ppa so you know what you are missing out on and can work around it. Where the correct ppa and sources are And compilation instructions

@stuffa Thank you for sharing. I edited your comment to remove the extraneous information unrelated to driver docs, and also to remove the phone number you included in your signature. As I can't remove the edit history, you may want to log into GitHub and delete/re-post your comment if you didn't intend to post that publicly.
