Create a Logo for SymEngine
How about something like this? Inspired by the SymPy logo.
It doesn't look very symmetric in the sketch, but will look great when it is geometrically correct. Any other ideas or modification suggestions are always welcome.
@abinashmeher999 I really like the concept of your logo. The SymPy logo consists of a closed box with a Python surrounding it, and when you open the box of SymPy, one can see the new Engine inside it which is C (C++), that's why it is called as "SymEngine", that's cool! @certik may like to have a look.
@aktech Thanks! Glad you liked it.
I like that a lot. But instead of the ball inside, I would put a sketch of an engine in there. When I imagine an engine, this is what comes to my mind: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=engine. Here is an example (obviously this is probably copyrighted, so we need to sketch something like it ourselves, or we can just buy a sketch, the prices are small, though the exact terms that one buys are not clear, so I think it's better if we just draw it ourselves for legal reasons):

So the box that's apart is the Sym part, and the engine in there would be the Engine part.
An engine will also look good. However, making an svg image like this from a bitmap shouldn't be that hard. I will try out different designs of engines and post it here.
The idea is cool :)
@abinashmeher999 just make sure you don't use any kind of copyrighted bitmaps or images. You can draw it by hand, and then vectorize it using tools like http://potrace.sourceforge.net/
@abinashmeher999 You can filter Google Images results by licenses. Click on "Search Tools" > "Usage rights" > "Labeled for reuse with modification". For example I this one from Wikimedia Commons

and this jet engine

Both of the images I posted above are in Public Domain so you can use them whatever way you want to. Wikimedia Commons gives Licenses and authors of the media, for example here are links for the images I posted above.
- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lincoln_Zephyr_V12_engine_%28Autocar_Handbook,_13th_ed,_1935%29.jpg
Often the images found at Wikimedia Commons are under Creative Commons - Share Alike - Attribution License which means you have to give credit to the original creator and you have release the modifications under the same license.
I recommend that you also upload the final work to Wikimedia Commons.
@certik I will keep that in mind. The tool that you mentioned is the same one that is available in Inkscape.
@hargup Thanks for the suggestion. I was looking for a few drawings like these. I didn't know that we can easily find them from Wikimedia Commons. I will browse through Wikimedia Commons and look for a coloured one in Public Domain if possible.

Sure.
Also, let's say I downloaded an image from the internet. How do I know if it is copyrighted just from the bitmap file? I suppose we need to trace it to the webpage it came from and check if there is any license.
For US law, the image is by default copyrighted by its author unless noted otherwise. Some image files may have license and author info in the metadata. In general, you should only use things that are explicitly licensed for reuse. You can also ask the author to license copyrighted work to you.
I see. Thanks @moorepants !
There are websites with explicitly public domain images, e.g. I found this engine: https://openclipart.org/detail/189603/v8-engine, but the camera is from the side, I think we should find a version with camera from an angle (like the art I posted above), so that it fits into the rest of the 3D logo. We might need to draw it ourselves.
Great idea!
@abinashmeher999, @hargup if you have time, we should try to finish this before our symengine scipy presentation, that would be great.
I did play with it a little bit. Since 3D models of engines are readily available, the way I planned it was to make a 3D model first and then export it to SVG using Blender or directly render it to SVG in Inkscape itself, rather than drawing it. I took the CAD models from grabcad.com. Let me know if these can be used. If not, we can try to contact the owner and see if (s)he can allow us to use it.
Maybe a gear like this one: https://thenounproject.com/search/?q=gears&i=172708
The gears reminded me of cube gears and that goes well with the cube in sympy logo too. So I decided to use it instead. Here is a draft of the logo that I have prepared(below one is a png but originally it is a svg). The result is very symmetric.
I have tried to keep the color scheme of the outer cube same as the sympy one, however I think something other than yellow might look better. Then again the current colors don't look bad either. Any suggestions for improvements are welcome.
@certik I hope it is ready in time for the presentation.
@abinashmeher999 this looks very good. However, I didn't mention it in the issue, but we discussed that we don't like the 3 gears that are stuck together, so they can't move, mechanically. It looks like these 3D gears also can't move... Is there another way to design them, so that they can actually move?
Overall this looks very good.
@certik They do move. https://youtu.be/jdBVXxF9_U8 It is based on an actual working 3D model of a toy. The fact that it moves is what fascinates everyone

@abinashmeher999 I see, I didn't realize that. I like it then. I like the colors. They are the same as for sympy, so that's consistent.
Did you create this all by yourself, or did you reuse somebody's else work? And if so, is the other work under a license that we could use?
@abinashmeher999 Great work!
Should we think of three things to show inverted on the reverse side of the cube? I've thought of that for the sympy logo as well.
One of them can be Aleph Null symbol, which represents the cardinality of a set of natural numbers. It relates to the set module and I like the concept of cardinality.

Thanks @aktech!
@certik Except the integration symbol and the x symbol from Sympy logo and the cube gears inside taken from the screenshot of the video I sent you (here will YouTube license be considered or GrabCad's?), I have created it all by myself. I found the video link from GrabCad and GrabCad Terms of Use section 6.2 says that we can indeed use User uploaded material. It would be better if someone could verify these.
@asmeurer I was thinking the same. It would make sense to make the complete enclosure semi transparent and then the other symbols would be visible too. Let me know if you and @hargup have any ideas for the other symbols.
@abinashmeher999 we'll have to verify that we can indeed use the gears. The best would be to write to the author of the video and get an explicit permission. Last thing we want is to use the logo, and then realize later we can't actually use it. @abinashmeher999 would you mind writing to the author, and CC me?
@certik I am not able to find the author's email ID. However, (s)he is very active on YouTube and might reply there. This is the link for the about page. I won't be able to CC you there, so it would be better if you could ask him/her. Or if you are busy, I can do it.
I would actually suggest using something simpler. Maybe just the gears, without the box. I don't think current logo won't look good at very small scales (like a favicon). But maybe I'm wrong. Can you scale it down to something really small so we can see what it looks like.
@asmeurer The favicons 16px by 16px and 32px by 32px for your reference.

I like the idea of having only the gears too. The cubical structure that ties it to sympy logo is already there. And if we look at other logos nowadays almost all of them are very simple.
It looks like this toy predates that YouTube video. So you may need to do some research to see who owns the copyright for it and if we can use it.
Side note: someone made a Rubik's cube out of this thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSwcrVhSQkI
Any updates on this?
