Unexpected token when clicking save

There appears to be an issue with the admin utility when you click save:

Unexpected token '<', "<!DOCTYPE "... is not valid JSON

The in the nginx logs you see:

"PATCH /api/v1/instance?undefined HTTP/1.1" 400

This is interfacing a gotosocial 0.6.0 instance.
