Improve show map display (on item view)
From: "Erik Steiner" [email protected] Hello again, Now I'm investigating the new map features (yay!). These comments are for the single item view. I very much look forward to seeing additional features down the road, including: 1. Being able to set the initial zoom level on a per-item basis. 2. Being able to switch between standard basemaps, and eventually any WMS endpoint. 3. Being able to maximize the map window size given the available space. 4. Being able to orient a "view" icon in the view direction. This might sound like a custom feature that only applies to the occasional image, but really any association of image and map will have a directionality to it. We have all the view directions in our data so if you want to test the feature, we'd be happy if you gave it a try with this archive :) I hope this helps! erik
If we decide not to try to tackle item #1 above (setting initial zoom on a per-item basis) due to complexity, we still might want to reevaluate the default initial zoom level we currently have, as a few spot checks I did jibe with the feeling of this Stanford user's feedback:
The default setting on the map is so zoomed in that unless one zooms out one cannot ascertain any geographic location.
@mejackreed let's discuss -- wondering if any of this could be in scope for the current Exhibits workcycle
@caaster will review and update this issue.
Erik Steiner used to work at Stanford, and his request was made within the context of 2 exhibits he's been involved in creating, Images of Rome and The Urban Legacy of Ancient Rome. While the features he is asking for are reasonable and no doubt useful, they are somewhat niche given that many exhibits do not include items with geospatial metadata. Because we are playing significant catch-up working on Exhibits and Spotlight in 2024 after a multi-year hiatus, and because we are not typically resourced to address these types of niche requests, I recommend that we remove this ticket from the 2024 WC board.
