Need to make these states (screenshots from CI) aren't reachable

In particular:

• Tree view should always have something connected for component to exist, so maybe there's a painting issue?
• Consider whether or not the root level should be selected by default
• In the windows screenshot, the root level appears selected but properties panel says "(nothing selected)" — this text needs to be more visible
