That's what I'm wondering. It's mame crashing here whilst trying to read the file. There's obviously something in the file it objects to, so if a 3rd party one works...

That looks like zdcc is applying range changing for a signed char value rather than an unsigned char value. The code generated looks right in this case though

Ooo, that's good, there is actually a driver for ADM3 in the CP/M library so it might be a "cheap and easy" gencon solution once ported.
