Drag and drop in the sidebar folder list

Open FichteFoll opened this issue 11 years ago • 14 comments

I'd be really nice to be able to drag and drop files in the sidebar to move them between directories instead of renaming them all the time.

It would be nice to have an API also.

I don't understand how an API would be involved with dragging and dropping files. Please elaborate.

For example, take a look to these events: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Guide/HTML/Drag_and_drop#events

if the drag source is a file of the sidebar, and the target is a view of another window, we can fix this issue: https://github.com/SublimeTextIssues/Core/issues/17

This is the only feature my favorite text editor lacks.

Don't see how this is a minor enhancement if I'm been honest.

Anyway +1 - 7 years on.

I’ve got by without it since about 2012 but I’d still welcome this functionality. For an app that deals with creating and editing files it feels like it should be possible to move those files easily within the sidebar.

Largest disappointment for me after I upgraded to Sublime 4 last week. We use Sublime for the whole company and the biggest complaint so far that I've heard is that you cannot drag & drop files in the sidebar. I also think for such a modern and feature-rich editor it looks strangely out-of-place nowadays that you still need to move files around by editing their path. Hope after the general Sublime 4 refurbishment, this issue will get more attention.

@rgpublic @ngmiduc There's a drag and drop multiselect feature in the pipeline currently for moving open files within and between groups. Moving files between project directories is something we're also actively looking into implementing.

If any ideas why it was not implemented since 2013(!)? That would a be VERY useful feature:

  1. Copy components from one part of a project to another (when you want to keep these components locally available only)
  2. Using some files as basic templates (say, scripts)
  3. Restructuring projects when code grows large and extracting parts in a separate folder
  4. Reconsidering folder structure and many, many other uses...

@hartsublime - Has this feature been completed yet? I am on build 4152 and not able to drag-n-drop yet.

The ticket is still open and it hasn't been implemented in a dev build either, so no, it's not completed.
