Use app menu rather than menu bar in elementary OS

Open sgpthomas opened this issue 8 years ago • 8 comments

Elementary apps generally try to get rid of the menu bar in favor of a gear icon with the menu options.

The menu bar should be disabled on elementary; is it not?

Not on mine. I just downloaded the elementary package from your website a few minutes ago

Why have a menubar at all? "Quit" is made redundant by the close button and "Capture" by the capture button. ;)

For access to actions via the HUD on Ubuntu, which is why the menu bar attempts to only show up if you're using Unity (although there's clearly a bug in how that's currently implemented).

Also, for access to Help > About, which should be how you find out which version of Pick you're running (once bug #15 is fixed), and see who wrote the app. (This is available as a desktop action, fortunately.)

Pertaining to the original issue: the menu items don't qualify for an elementary gear menu.

I would find it very useful to Pick with with the 'always on top' context option from the title bar, but this doesn't work. I guess these are related issues.

Isn't it possible to keep both traditional menu and AppMenu, but display traditional menu only on Unity 7? That way it'd look good on GNOME and elementary OS, but still have HUD support on Unity 7 :relaxed:
