I would close this, the project is clearly alive. Release 1.6.2 was tagged today
It could be now a good occasion to test that performance hit, do you want a PR for this @imincik for testing as part of your current performance analisys ?

It's also a great way to make sure custom templates keep working (and to determine how much of an hassle it is to change template structure :)
