Feature request: Show submission types while grouping
As a retro participant grouping retro items, I want to be able to see whether individual items are start/stop/continue (for example) So that I better understand the items I am grouping.
By Way Of Explanation: When retro participants are grouping retro items into related groups, they cannot see which of the columns (like sad/happy/confused or start/stop/continue) applies to each individual retro item. This could be communicated with an icon, text, or both.
Acceptance Criteria:
- [ ] In the retro item grouping view, each individual item has its retro item category (for example, "stop" in a start/stop/continue retro) communicated on its card.
Hey Remote Team!
It's been a bit - I'm not sure if this issue has already been claimed, but would love the chance to take it on! I've played around with what this could look like and would love feedback on the approach.
I made a simple small image inline conveying the category demonstrated here...
Alternatively, I've thought about...
- Having the image centered at the top of the grouping_idea_card
- A tooltip conveying the category in text or image on hover
- An overlay on the grouping_idea_card on hover
Hey @douglasnaphas, thanks for cooking this up. I played around with @pwjablonski 's ideas, and settled on the following solution as a starting point: we now add a text prefix of (start)
, (stop)
, or (continue
) to the cards in the Start/Stop/Continue format, as users in that format tend to use the category as the presumed 'stem' of their submission in the idea generation stage, i.e. they submit 'stop' ideas that read 'merging lint', rather than writing 'stop merging lint' (as it would be redundant within the columnar layout).
Note: this category info isn't as crucial in the happy/sad/confused confused format, and we actually want to encourage folks to group those ideas together (as often they are related), so we're not going to add this to Happy/Sad/Confused format, though I'm open to more discussion.
@pwjablonski I played around with your ideas in development, and felt that text was the easiest solution for the start/stop/continue format, as the size of the icons would need to be quite large for people to see it clearly, and category text sits nicely inline with the body text of the card. Regardless, thanks for taking a look.
New Start/Stop/Continue grouping cards look like:

The emoji and the text both solve the problem. I like them both.
I do think that the submission type should be seen, whether as an emoji or text, in happy/sad/confused-style retros. My team does happy/sad/confused retros, and the need for the submission type in this kind of retro was what let me to raise the issue.
I think emojis for happy/sad/confused and text for start/stop/continue would be a great solution to the issue.
