Some Bugs & Product Suggestions

Open streetwriters[bot] opened this issue 1 year ago • 1 comments

Hi,

I would like to report on some bugs.

  1. The app lock for the latest iOS with the latest patch is not working properly. As I do not use biometrics, but password only, I could not unlock my app.

I have to uninstall the app, and reinstall it to use. I have to reduce the security level to none to disable the app lock.

I’m now securing via the vaults function.

  1. All long notes nearing 5,000 words and above will react sluggishly, from typing to cursor movement to blotting (highlight selecting) to everything.

Making use of the app very slow, nearly unresponsive, and arduous.

Do note that the exact notes number size to gain such negative effects are unknown. It just so happens I have many notes nearly of the above mentioned sizes & larger. So my 35k+ and above worded notes are suffering from severe poor user experience.

Newly created notes feels normal.

Also some spacing will have a memory of its own, where it will be gone every time I exit the note. I tried redoing it, but it’s gone every time I exit the note. This appears randomly in long notes. I hope it doesn’t affect the shorter ones.

  1. The auto backup does not seem to be working. Currently mine is set to encrypted backup on a daily basis. I’m now backing up manually.

  2. This a minor bug on my take. The toolbar is slightly obscured by the keyboard during use. It might look in place once loaded, but once I scroll up & down, it will revert back to it being permanently partially obscured.

It doesn’t affect my ability to see the toolbar’s contents. Some how I do enjoy the slightly larger screen size.

  1. Another minor bug on my take. The typing cursor can be off sync at times & end up slightly below the “line”. Usually resolving on its own after I carry on typing.

All these happened after the version 2 update, and remains unresolved from your most recent patch.

I’m unable to reflect these errors early due to the backlog of work & spacing format being erased from all my notes from your recent app down & erroneous bugs.

That’s all for the bugs.

Now, here is the suggestions section. Some suggestions.

  1. Have an independent password for app lock. The account login password used now can be very long, robust, and difficult to use (I have to keep reaching for my timed out password manager).

A separate independent password for app lock, where one can set a simple password would increase the user experience (my take).

Also for the security conscious, should the compromise of the app lock password which is often used (e.g. at all private & public places), will mean chances of the less used account password (e.g. chosen to use at home only), may have lesser chance of being compromised.

  1. Have unlimited vaults. The leaking of one vault password will not compromise the rest of the vaults.

E.g. One vault for banking matters notes & notebooks. The next for work. The third for secret weekend project.

Your account password & work vault password got compromised from that nosy voyeur hacker in the cafe work setting.

So the rest of the vaults are safe, except for the work vault & the rest of the unimportant non-vault notes.

This might improve work flow for some people who don’t use app lock. Keeping Notesnook within easy reach. Writing any notes, then tossing the important ones into the chosen vault (if unlimited vaults have been implemented).

The vault lock logo can have 1, 2, 3, or name your own beside it (I prefer the later).

  1. Suggestion for unlimited vaults here as well. Under security settings, there can be these selections under vaults.

Setting 1 : Once the individual note is unlocked, it remains unlocked until I tap on the unlocked Logo to lock it (becomes a closed lock Logo). Or till I close the app or log out.

Setting 2 : Lock the unlocked note after last use, within the user’s stipulated time span &/ fixed 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 30 mins, 1 hr. Or till I close the app or log out.

Setting 3 : (Which is currently being implemented by Notesnook) Vault Note will lock on note exit.

Settings 1 & 2 can be very useful for those doing coping & pasting, cross coping & pasting, cross reference, cross editing & etc across multiple unlocked vault notes & non-vault notes within Notesnook & other apps.

Also make available of the permanent display of the unlocked lock logo e.g. prominently displayed at the top right highlighted in red, when any vault notes is unlocked. Tapping on it to lock will display a highlighted green locked lock logo upon successful locking. Than green lock logo disappears after e.g. 5 to 15 sec after locking.

If more then 1 vault note is unlocked, the option to close any selected individual note/s (with check button beside to tap on) or lock all unlocked vault notes option menu will appear for selection.

  1. I’m no security expert here, for this part of the suggestion.

I happen to come across this sometime ago when reading more about Tresorit on Wikipedia. Here is the part I find that Notesnook can implement, if it’s not already done.

— Tresorit uses random keys for each file and random IVs for each version of a file. The company claims that two identical files look completely different after encryption, thus they cannot be compared or matched. — From Tresorit on Wikipedia Technology section.

  1. After I unsuccessfully tried to copy & paste pictures on to Notesnook, I thought about this.

Pasted photos will be uploaded & remains where it is until removed. The photo will be sized down to fit the page. Double tapping on the sized down photo, will open up a window with the actual sized photo, where one can “open pinch” to expand & zoom the photo, “close pinch” to size down the photo, & the standard tap & shift to move & explore the photo. A quick close pinch with finger removed from screen will close the open photo window (just like all touch screen standard movement).

Notesnook can be made to allow the inserting of photos, pictures, videos, voice memos, charts, attachments, & etc inserts at which ever part of the note the user likes.

  1. (Here is another suggestion) Now, afraid that this will bust your server storage memory? (Taking a leaf from Apple here) How about providing all Free users with 5 Gb storage.

All Pro subscribers will get 50 Gb storage banded in.

Need more storage? How about charge like Apple? Currently Apple Singapore users for iCloud+ is paying S$1.28/month for 50 Gb, S$3.98/month for 200 Gb, & S$12.98/month for 2 Tb (prices include VAT - where applicable).

All these come complete with a data storage gauge for all users.

Perhaps this is another income stream for you to grow your business? More income to employ a bigger team so your current team will not be overwhelmed with work? Less buggy app?

That’s all. Thank you for reading. Do remember to rectify the bugs.

Thank you.

Wong

The auto backup does not seem to be working.

This a minor bug on my take. The toolbar is slightly obscured by the keyboard during use.

Above issues has been fixed. Will be available in next release by tomorrow.

Another minor bug on my take. The typing cursor can be off sync at times & end up slightly below the “line”. Usually resolving on its own after I carry on typing.

Right now there isn't a way to fix this. However I have made some tiny improvements which might help.

For App lock you are right. Adding unlock with pin support is necessary if someone does not want to use bio-metrics.

For your other suggestions, we will discuss and respond here later.
