LanguageTool Integration?

Open candroid-man opened this issue 3 years ago • 1 comments

Request

Instead of using average spellcheck, you could use integrate LanguageTool using their API. LanguageTool is an open-source Grammarly alternative that has created plugins for many FOSS applications such as LibreOffice and OpenOffice, but also Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

Concerns

  1. LanguageTool is open source, but there is a premium version with more features, so you would have to work that out with the LanguageTool team
  2. Even though LanguageTool is open source and supports FOSS applications, it would be wise to do extensive research into LanguageTool and see how they handle user privacy

Additional context

While this would attract even more people, I recommend being cautious. It would be a fantastic feature, but it could also compromise the privacy of all Notesnook users if implemented improperly or if LanguageTool itself is not privacy-friendly.

I'm using LanguageTool on Firefox since forever and really like it, the extension works in the web version but it would be great to have it in the apps too. Or at least an active auto correct, because as far as I know Notesnook on Windows does not support the Windows grammar check (probably due to privacy issues).

I also use it in Firefox and nvim. I've configured every note-taking app I've tried to use nvim as my external editor, just so I can edit and fix with LanguageTool. I'll add that I find the squiggly lines slow me down while writing, so I generally toggle it on and off. I would love to have that also in NotesNook if this is implemented.
