Once battery turns red, it will never go back to normal after charging

I have experienced a problem which can be reproduced as follows:

Let battery get below 15% to get the fully red battery icon
Charge the battery to way above 15%
Icon is still red, however if I reload awesome with Ctrl+Super+r, the icon shows as it should
