Checklist
Checklist for quest suggestions (see guidelines):
- [x] 🚧 To be added tag is established and has a useful purpose
- [x] 🤔 Any answer the user can give must have an equivalent tagging (Quest should not reappear to other users when solved by one)
- [x] 🐿️ Easily answerable by everyone from the outside but a survey is necessary
- [x] 💤 Not an overwhelming percentage of elements have the same answer (No spam)
- [x] 🕓 Applies to a reasonable number of elements (Worth the effort)
According to taginfo this quest would apply to about 120.000 elements
Ideas for implementation
Element selection: overpass-turbo
Proposed GUI:
Maybe we can make use of the phone's sensors (accelerometer, magnetic field) to let the user easily select a direction...
tag documentation: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:direction#Field_of_view_of_a_tourism_viewpoint
I like this quest, it would led users to nice places.

Hehe, do we now also consider this aspect in StreetComplete? 😃 But, generally, why not, yeah…
Maybe we can make use of the phone's sensors
Indeed, but as phones can also be wrongly calibrated, still display the result (i.e. compass?) and maybe let the user manually adjust it…
How is this information in any way useful?

At least the OpenTopoMap does not show viewpoints which don't have a direction tag... And it is highly appreciated to use both tags and not only tourism=viewpoint, so it is in some kind of way missing data...

Some maps show direction of viewpoint (I encountered it on some printed maps, not based on OSM data) - it gives some info what is visible from a given place (sometimes view is restricted, in mountains typically by forest).
direction tag gives data to make such display possible.
As side effect it verifies whatever viewpoint exists at all (I deleted some viewpoints that at time of my editing were not worth marking - either because situation changed or because tagging was wrong from start).
What could be problematic is when people add viewpoint's to OSM when there are actually multiple things where you can look through (let's say on towers e.g.)…
But, no, hey… viewpoint is not restricted to technical equipment, right? So actually this would be 360°…? In such a case, I think, you have to make that clear to the user, because they may think they should only enter only the "angle" of the (special) binoculars they can use there.
Maybe exclude the combination with leisure=bird_hide`, which is, by far, the most common viewpoint in my area. Or maybe that's a good hint to find where the birds are, ha!

Maps can show the lookout direction as part of the cartography eg. https://www.beyondtracks.com/map/#15/-33.61876/151.26052
It's useful for people using those maps to know what the lookout looks at.
As mentioned here, using the phone company is not reliable enough generally, when I add this using JOSM, I'll trace a line out over the satellite imagery to what you can see in the distance and use this for the angles.
