I am using the front end shortcode for basic user avatars. My users in many cases have already uploaded a number of images. It would be convenient if they could choose an image from the media library. This would also help prevent users from uploading the same image over and over.

Thanks for posting this here, the reason we don't allow this (for now) is for security reasons and the difficulty of allowing users access to only certain images on the media library and also it may clutter the media library for admins at scale.

I think there may be a similar solution we could consider and improve the clean up if users change their avatars but don't choose to delete it, it should probably be cleaned up.

I don't have any time frame or guarantee on this feature being released but I will keep this open to kick off discussions within our community and developers.
