Broken links in Dev Guide/Put back DM details

I neglected to do the link checking properly for #2598 and there are now broken links in the documentation on master. I've also realised that we've lost some useful information on the distributed memory implementation. I think it was right to remove it/condense it in the User Guide but possibly a lot of it should have also been moved to the Developer Guide.
