Odd 3d audio effect

Open dillfrescott opened this issue 3 years ago • 13 comments

I am using VDO Ninja to talk with my brother, and occasionally when he talks the audio glitches out and stereo expands, and also sometimes goes to the right or left ear, almost like a panning effect. He uses a Blue Yeti microphone. Not sure if its specific to his hardware but the effect doesn't happen on discord or Jitsi Meet.

Are you using &proaudio or &stereo by chance in the URL?

Hmm... No pro audio isnt enabled. Here is a picture of my settings in the control room.

Oh, also, are the two switches on the left most column supposed to both be named "Invite saved to cookie"?

Thank you for pointing out that error with wrong text label; it was an error in the translation files. I fixed that on beta: https://vdo.ninja/beta/?dir=kjhkjkghj just now. I'll update beta soon enough with these changes as well.

As for the audio issue, I've never heard of it before. What browser are you using by chance? chrome? If they use Firefox, does it happen if they use a different browser?

Ok cool!

We are both using Firefox. That could be the issue. I haven't tested it with any other browser but we both got off for the night and I'll have to test it with him the next time he is available.

I had asked him if my mic was doing the weird audio effects in short blips like that and he said it wasn't.

I'm sorry that I can't further troubleshoot the issue right now, let me know if there's any more info you might need.

I'll probably be talking with another friend using it sometime soon, I will make another comment here if I experience it happening with his microphone as well.

Firefox has had some audio issues for me in the past, in particular, it likes to often use Stereo audio even when I don't tell it too. Still, it shouldn't be having problems like that.

You can try to use &proaudio&mono in the future with your friend to try to improve the audio quality even more; happy to give details on that if needed.

Sounds good! I appreciate the help. This is a wonderful project and I'm so glad you are able to work on it and make further improvements!

Have a great rest of your day and I'll hit you up if I need any more help with things.

@steveseguin would there be any way you can add an official volume bar so people in the call can raise and lower each others volumes? My friend is having difficulties getting the show controls volume bar to pop up.

Sorry if thats asking for too much but he is complaining about it.

Hi @DillFrescott

A few questions;

What browser / device are they using, where they are having troubles?

Are you using a custom deployment of VDO.Ninja, or the officially hosted one?

There is a volume control slider already, so I'm also a bit curious what problems they are having, as if I add my own volume slider, how will it be any better?

I also just updated github, as last week I made a change to production that has the control bar auto-appear after 3 seconds. This wasn't in the official 18.3 release, but it is in this pull request. I'm not sure if this will fix your issue or not though https://github.com/steveseguin/vdo.ninja/tree/18.4.beta

I believe he uses Chrome. Maybe he just missed it? We were only in a call for about 2 minutes before I had to go.

I infact did download a fresh copy of chrome and it indeed had the volume bar. I'm just thinking maybe theres some weird fluke perhaps where show controls is deactivated? I'm not really an expert on things but maybe a more official GUI volume bar would look a bit cleaner too and work for him.

I just forked your repo and activated pages on it btw. So technically its a custom deployment.

dillfrescott avatar Jul 22 '21 02:07 dillfrescott

Its no problem if you don't want to add it. But i figured I might as well just throw it out there to add a more official one.

I'd like to add a custom control bar, where I can include a settings gear icon with popup menu of other options. It just is quite the challenge, as there are mobile users and different sized screens -- it's very hard to do it well.

The feedback and request is greatly appreciated; there definitely is a volume slider currently, but it's good to know some people are having problems with it.

As also mentioned, there is a different between the 18.3 release on github and what's currently hosted at vdo.ninja. The 18.3 release didn't always show the volume controls, but the 18.4. branch should. If you hosted the code yourself, try to see maybe if your guest has a problem with the vdo.ninja hosted version, and if they don't have problems with it, consider upgrading to 18.4 beta.

steveseguin avatar Jul 22 '21 02:07 steveseguin

Sure. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it! I'll upgrade to the 18.4 beta and see how it goes. You've really been a great help for my issues haha. Thank you!
