Screenshot visible portion only

Open adalinesimonian opened this issue 8 years ago • 8 comments

There are often times, when, for the purpose of a bug report or some other issue, I really only need a screenshot of exactly what I'm looking at.

It would be great to have some option to only capture the visible portion of the screen without having to resort to loading up some editing tool afterwords and mess with the file.

Good idea, did you found a solution for this ?

@miranos So far, when I only need a piece, I'm just using Print Screen + Paint. It's a bit of a hassle, so I'm really looking forward to having this functionality as a part of the extension.

I'm using this extension at work, where we use Windows, but I haven't had a chance to fork the project and dig in myself yet.

I guess I don't have this need that much, so I'm hesitant to just add it. Also, I use Mac a lot and it's very easy to do this in Mac. The shortcut Cmd+Shift+4 gives you a cursor with which you can just click and drag the area you want a screenshot of. Maybe there's a similar program for Windows? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201361

But I can totally help you two create a fork with this feature, and then if I like it, I can include it in the official extension.

Windows does not really have anything intuitive and quick for taking a screenshot of a portion of your screen. There are shortcuts for all displays/monitors and for a single window.

However, if you want to take a screenshot of a region, you either have to screenshot the window and open up the screenshot in MS Paint, or you have to use the clunky Snipping Tool (yuck). This may be similar to some use cases on certain GNU/Linux distributions as well.

I like the fork idea. I'm sure it's not going to be a major addition which adds heavy weight to the extension, but I'd like to see it in practice first. Hopefully, you think it's pretty crafty (even on my MacBook, it'd be nice to automatically get a pixel-perfect screenshot of just the visible webpage without having to drag around). And if you do, I think it'd be a welcome addition to this extension.

I'm at work right now, but when I am at home, I might get in touch. It might be a bit of a while, since I just moved into a new apartment and things are absolutely crazy at home. But I do want to seriously implement this.
