Loading .vels file causes Java exception

Kubuntu 16.10 (amd64), R 3.3.1, OpenJDK 1.8.0_121, Systemic 2.2.0

Attempting to load a .vels file results in a Java exception being logged to the console (note I cannot load a .sys file due to #24). Exception message is as follows:
