Turn Off "Data not backed up" Warning If Data Has Been Backed Up Recently To Local File
I am backing up my data to a local file, not the internet, but even though I have just backed up my data to a local file, the warning message on the main page still says "Data not backed up" all the time. This just doesn't feel right.
Since there are multiple ways to back up data, I think the warning should recognize this and only display if a backup hasn't been made recently EITHER to the internet OR to a file.
It would be nice to have a setting "Warn if data not backed up in x days" then allow the user to choose their own way to backup. We should be able to control this warning. It is a great feature but it can be better!
It would also be nice if there was an auto backup to file feature. "Auto backup to file every x days" is a suggestion. If this is on then the warning should disappear.
Some ideas :-)
Hi @landry314,
What version of the app are you using? This issue was introduced in an earlier version of the app but was fixed weeks ago. Are you signed in or using the app "offline"?
I am always using the most recent version released on github for Android. I am on a Pixel 3 on LineageOS 18.0 (Android 11)
Thanks for letting me know! Are you signed into an account or using the app without one?
no account, just local storage
We'll probably keep this message as not every user is aware of the option that they can create an account, knows how to backup their notes via the settings page, or know how to transfer it to another device.
Of course keeping the warning is a good idea. I was suggesting it shouldn't be displayed right after I just backed up to a file. The warning system doesn't take into account local file backups using your "Export Data" feature. It is always there taking up screen real estate when I am backing up regularly anyway, just not to the cloud.
Once a user uses the "Export Data" backup method in the Settings then he is clearly aware of the backup options available to him and no longer needs to be educated about it as suggested above. To be warned about not having backed up since a certain amount of time IS useful and a warning after, let's say, a week that said "Data not backed up for a week" would be useful but this is a new feature request.
Another, easier solution would be to create a new setting to disable this warning. At the point the user intentionally disabled this warning, he would be aware of his backup options.
Currently, the warning is not accurate in it's wording. If the wording was changed to "Data not backed up to cloud" then it would, at the least, be accurate. Since I am not planning on using the cloud, it would still, to me, be a useless warning, but It would be accurate.
I am suggesting the best possible correction of this would be to add to the warning feature to include all possible backup methods, "Export Data" and the "Account Sign In" methods.
There are many possibilities here. I will arrange them in order of more work to least work:
-
Improve warning system to account for "Export Data" backup as well as the cloud. Have the warning be customizable in settings, both with the option to choose how long it takes to warn the user since the last backup, displaying how long it has been in the warning itself, AND with an option to disable the warning altogether if the user just doesn't care to be warned. Maybe the user is using the app for data he just doesn't care if he loses. Maybe the user has an automatic backup scheme on his own and doesn't need the app to remind him.
-
Just add a setting to disable the warning system without adding more functionality to it. The user can shut it off if he doesn't need it.
-
Change the text to read "Data not backed up to online account" OR "Data not backed up to cloud", however you wish to refer to it. Then at least it would be accurate even though it is still taking up space.
I am just trying to offer good suggestions! Thank you for your app!
What about making the warning dismissible? I don't need to backup notes
