High CPU usage in the Windows desktop version (Electron) on Windows 10

Open spiralmike opened this issue 11 months ago • 0 comments

Describe the bug When the desktop app (Electron version) version 3.195.13 is open and idle on Windows 10 on my laptop, it fully utilizes the entirety of 1 virtual CPU core (16% of my 8 core hyperthreaded CPU) causing the fans to run at maximum and the CPU clock frequency to stay at maximum. This results in excessive energy consumption and heat.

This happens when the app is running even without being used, and the system returns to a normal state once the app is closed.

This seems to indicate that either Electron itself or something in the app has a single thread that spins all the time without waiting or sleeping, perhaps polling the network or a lock.

The web version does not have this problem in Chrome or Firefox. Other apps that use Electron (e.g. DIscord) don't have this problem either.

To Reproduce Run the desktop (Electron) app on Windows 10 (no idea if the problem is resolved in Windows 11). Observe the CPU usage in task manager or process hacker.

Expected behavior When the app is idle it should consume negligible resources.

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • OS: Windows 10 Pro 22H2, 64 GB RAM, Core i9-9980HK 2.4ghz

App version is 3.195.13 and I have the pro version

** WORKAROUND **

Add the flag --disable-gpu to the launch shortcut after ..\Standard Notes.exe

Seems like this might be an Electron / Nvidia issue.
