Cannot import from Simplenote

Describe the issue Fresh install of StandardNote. (Like the idea of the security.) I have exported my notes from Simplenote, as per the instructions, to produce a ZIP file on my local drive (Ubuntu Linux). When I follow the instructions to import it to Standardnote, nothing happens except an exclamation mark appears next to the filename. No other info and the red exclamation mark has no tooltip-like explanation.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Go to Standardnote, Import dialogue window. Select the Simplenote button
2. Click on Import after selecting the filrename of the exported Simplenote data
3. See error/exclamation mark

Expected behavior A confirmation of succesful import message.

I see, can I ask you to try extracting the contents of the zip file, then under the source folder, try to import the .json file there instead, and let me know how it goes?

I believe that I have a related issue. Export from Simplenote Android and import to Standard Note Android. Standard Note gives me the response to importing the .json file as: “Content is not valid.” I have tried exporting and importing twice with the same result.

Hi @globetrotterdk, I'm afraid I wasn't able to reproduce that so far with some notes on Simplenote Android. If you have some sample notes that we can use for testing this further, can I ask you to export those into a json file, then send it to us at [email protected]?

I am also having issues importing my long list of notes from SimpleNotes to StandardNotes

I experienced the same issue when exporting from Simplenote web or desktop (macOS). Standard Notes only accepts the json format (source code).

So, in order to import from Simplenote you need to extract the notes.zip file. When importing into Standard Notes navigate to the directory where the zip files were extracted and inside the source directory you will find the notes.json file (eg: ~/Downloads/notes/source/notes.json) that will be imported without any issues.
