Ecosystem Programs:

GRANT MISSION, IMPACT, RISKS & REFERENCE

Grant Mission:         “NFTs Licenses” is a topic greatly discussed these days, since Andressen launched their proposal of “Can’t be evil licenses” deployed in Solana. Any NFTs marketplace should consider including licensing options as a tool for the self-management of creators, and the Stacks ecosystem deserves having a marketplace with such licenses.

With this set of Smartists licensing Agreements we are opening the door to any independent artist minting NFTs on Stacks, to start managing securely their Intellectual Property.

We are considering a wide range of use cases within the scope of artists/copyrights holders. So we look forward to seeing our set of licenses used and adapted by other marketplaces in the ecosystem.

Grant Impact:               This will be the first serious approach to IP licensing in the Stacks ecosystem, and one of the very few on the web3. So we expect:

  • new artists joining marketplaces in the ecosystem. marketplaces in the ecosystem using and adapting these licensing agreements improving dramatically their services. Visibility of Stacks (media coverage).

Grant Risks:                          This is a “revolutionary project” that entails the risks and challenges of a slow adoption. Yet, we are addressing a problem that is becoming visible in these days, so this is the time to address this.

We will be working in educational materials to make a presentation of these licensing agreements to developers and users, to ease their way to embrace Intellectual property management (once in the hands of few, now in the hands of everyone on the web3).

👋 @SmartMirlo Thanks for your application! We will do a pre-review and let you know if we have any immediate questions. In the mean time please refer to our review schedule here for a detailed timeline and response dates. Best, Will

Thank you for accepting our application On Deck The basic set of licenses we propose here is just the starting point to help many creators retake control of their Intellectual Property on the web and be able to manage the rights they own in the user-owned Internet Stacks is building on the web3. In our DApp, Smartists, we will integrate these licenses as the best options for independent artists to grant use rights to NFTs buyers.

For important personal reasons I have not been in my office in the past two weeks and I could not engage with the Stacks community. I wonder if it is too late... I know that Ip licensing for NFTs is an important feature for many members, but this is something you may need to check.

Moreover, as I haven't heard from you, I wonder if the Review phase is still open.

I am looking forward to any answer. Thank you.

I 'd like to know what is the present state of,this application. We are progressing with our Roadmap goals, and we keep wondering about the possibility of providing some open source solutions for IP management in the Stacks ecosystem. @will-at-stacks , we would be grateful for any answer you could provide.

I think you have an interesting project. If you haven't already gone through the Stacks Web3 Startup Lab, I would like to invite you to apply.

Here's a 5-minute read on how we can help you turn your startup idea into an investment-ready startup: www.web3startuplab.io

If you are interested, you can apply through the "Apply Now" button.

Dear Scarlett,

I thank you for the invitation. Nevertheless, I am afraid our "project" is much more mature than you suggest, and are looking for in the Web3 StartUp Lab. I had a first idea for Smartists in 2019. Then, in January 2020 I started shaping that idea with potential users, in an ideation process via surveys and interviews. After that we started prototyping... Most of our fist followers from then are still with us today, so we have a small but loyal community (Discord, Newsletter, Blog). In 2021, thanks to a grants form the Stacks Foundation, we researched and programmed our first smart contracts to attach a license to genuine NFTs. Last summer we incorporated as a StartUp, and I am not anymore on my own.

We are a team of four, and we are all very busy working in different matters (tech development, business, legal, community). I really wonder if/who could consider participating in the StartUp Lab at this moment, because we cannot stop our current Roadmap for three months.

Hello @SmartMirlo

Thank you for the application and for your patience with the grant review process. We did a thorough review of all of the applications (each application received an average of 6 reviews from members of the Grants Review Committee).  However, after much consideration, we decided not to fund any of the Cohort 19 grant applications as we did not feel they aligned with critical priorities core to the development of the Stacks blockchain.

We invite you to please read this blog post we authored to help elaborate on the reasoning behind this decision and clarify the current mission of the Grants Program.

Thanks in advance, Will Stacks Foundation Grants Program Manager
