Avoid creating widgets for Spacers

This change will be more involved that it sounds, because at the moment every single view has to be backed by a widget, but I think a system that allowed for Spacers to be widgetless would likely also open up the door to improvements such as being able to avoid intermediate widgets for views such as the padding modifier's implementation view.
