Support for GDAL related assets

It would be great to have support for loading GDAL related assets (To manage /vsi* URLs).

As I can see @ahuarte47 filed this issue and created new PR with same changes as the previous one. @Samweli is that what you wanted him to do? What else should be done to have the PR be merged?
