Drop Python 3.8 support

It has reached EOL at 2024-10-07 (source). While working on #342 I noticed that a substantial portion of the code could be simplified by supporting only >=3.9. Is that a desirable improvement? I could prepare a PR with the necessary changes + code simplifications.
