Add an option to blacklist words/remove slurs

Open wiggleforlife opened this issue 5 months ago • 11 comments

Hey! I'm really enjoying TT9. It's a great app and I appreciate the time and effort that has gone into it.

When using it, I have noticed that the English dictionary contains a good few slurs, such as the n-word, hard R, homophobic slurs, transphobic, etc. Every time I type the word "night," the n-word is suggested in the top three or four suggestions. I would like a way to remove this option - an accidental typo of a word like that is the last thing I want.

Request accepted. I agree this is an important feature.

Maybe it would be easier to just remove them from English dictionary all together and if anyone wants them they just need to add them back!

I really don't think they'll be missed, however...

On the other hand, it will force you to step in every time a new word is found...

Maybe, but even if I speak English, it isn't my native language and I have absolutely no idea what this means:

... the English dictionary contains a good few slurs, such as the n-word, hard R, homophobic slurs, transphobic, etc.

... so, I can't find the words in question.

Besides all that, I have received complaints from religious people, who get offended because of certain words that seemed quite normal to me (I don't remember which words though). I know some software developers get offended when they see the words: "master", "black" and "white". This even forced GitHub developers to do some major changes to the platform.

But these are just words to me. I really don't understand what's wrong with them. Neither will I be able to make a list that satisfies everyone. So, this feature is probably best I can offer.

I have absolutely no idea what this means:

@sspanak to avoid explain/using offensive words on a public place, i've explained it via email

I have removed the offensive words from the English dictionary in v52.0. It is a quick-fix, until I get to the blacklist functionality. Don't forget to reload the dictionary, if it doesn't happen automatically.

Not happy about the swear words removal tbh, can I get the previous dictionary back somehow?

There removed words are only 55. You should be able to re-add the ones you use manually.

Alternatively, you can import them from TT9 Settings -> Languages -> Added Words -> Import. You can use the list of removed words to create a text file for importing. The file must contain one word per line, followed by a TAB, followed by the number 453.

For example:

shit	453
dickhead	453
...

I may restore them after I add the blacklist option.

EDIT: This is a reply to a deleted comment by @PVTejas wrongly using their work account. The questions still stand, so I am keeping the rest of the correspondence as-is.

Yeah I am adding the ones I use manually, and seem to have covered the most used ones. Thanks for pointing me to the list of removed words. What does the 453 signify

453 stands for English language. If you change the number, you will import them into another language.

Also, after looking at the list, I see that there are some genuine slurs there that are not acceptable, and I'd like to thank you for removing them.

What is acceptable is entirely a personal preference. Some people may want to use all of them, some people may not want to see any of them. So, I've handpicked the most common ones that I thought could be considered offending.

P.S. you may want to double-check which account you are using, if it matters for work safety policies. 😉

Yeah I try to keep them separate but I slip up now and then 😩

Thank you! There's still at least one lingering (transphobic slur tr**ny), but I understand that you're not a native speaker. I'll keep this issue open until we have the blacklist feature!

Thanks to this issue I have learnt so many new words! I didn't know any "transphobic slur" either. According to Wikipedia, it has no other widely used meaning, so I'll remove it in the next version. I don't think this particular one will be missed.
