single column mode in top level has multi column mode in sub level
I use single column mode ("Display search engines in a single column with labels. Overrides columns setting") for the toolbar menu, and when I open a folder, it is displayed in multi column mode. I would expect or want the same mode instead. As I just tested, the sidebar and quickmenu do the same.
I am not really sure, but I think it worked like this at some time ago? I guess, I would have complained already, if it didn't. Or may be I am missing something or something has changed and I don't know how to achieve the desired behavior?
Background:
In my usage, the most used engines live in the top level and I know each of them quite well. Everything else is sorted into folders. In fact I have several flat sections and each starts with a kind of overflow folder that is also used as a separator and it's name is also used as the name of the category. So, in the folders, I gather engines that are not frequently used, so I don't recognize them by only an icon. The title is kind of mandatory here. I also use single column mode for the toolbar menu which I mostly use in case I'm not sure about a top level engine.
From what I tested, you seem to invert the mode for the sub levels? Instead I would either make them independent or set the sub levels fixed to a single column. Multicolumn mode may also be useful in the sub levels for some users. So I think the modes should be:
- icon / icon
- icon / text
- text / text
The missing text / icon doesn't make sense to me (but could be allowed when there would be two separate check boxes).

The CTRL + . inverts the current folder's view only ( grid -> single column or vice-versa as far as I remember anyway ). Not a robust method, but it was just tacked on with zero UI. I was playing around with adding some icons to the search engines manager for folder to change settings. After I move the docking handles to iframes, I'll look into it.
ok, I see, I wasn't aware of Ctrl + .
I'm adding a setting in the search engine manager for folder display. Currently, it's a dropdown list with options for default, text, grid. The latter two should override whatever the current display is with that option. You can still ctrl + . to toggle between default and whatever the current general setting for that menu display is not. Any old toggle settings will be ignored so you'll need to redo them. Changes will be in the next push.
I tested with an old configuration and this works for all my tests...
However, I use the flat mode now...so no tests in daily usage
when thinking about it, I don't have text mode when expanding the "+" in flat mode, so my problem was transformed into another space now.
I am not sure how this could be handled in flat mode.
Eventually, the expanded icons could be shown in single column with title, but this mixed mode seems to be weird and implementation should be difficult.
When hovering over an icon, I get a display of the title below the search box and after some time I get a tooltip. However, when dragging a selection, both title displays and even Ctrl + . do not work.
The most useful option would probably be to have an area or button working as mode switch when hovering over it. May be, a button in the titlebar (with settings and close) would do best.
May be, a button in the titlebar
If it wasn't for some weirdness when using <select> elements in the iframes ( overflow issues, scaling issues ) I'd add all kinds of options. Maybe I can do what I did with the suggestions box and add some resize handlers for an additional menu.
