Can you explain the plots in more detail?

I can't quite grasp how to read them

Yes good question I should make them more clear. Happy for any suggestions

  • The red "spotlight" is showing df(x)_o / dx_i pointing from i to o.
  • The white "nudge" on f(x) is showing the target: \sum_i df(x)_o / dx_i . i.e. the change in f(x) with a \epsilon increase to all x's
  • The red "nudge" on f(x) is showing the user try at: \sum_i df(x)_o / dx_i .

For some problems it gets a bit messy, so I have a sparse mode. In the sparse mode instance of all i , I only show these values for some of the i's.

Where are the white "nudge" and red "nudge"?

The white nudge is the region above the f(x) line here before you have started. It's kind of telling you the answer:

The red nudge shows up after you give an answer: here I gave a constant negative value and the nudge is below the line.

I see, interesting! The most obvious information the plot gives is which outputs are linked to which inputs, and then there's a subtler info about how wrong the dx's are. Did I get that correctly?

That's correct.
