Appears to fail to log in with Wordpress not in root directory

I have a site at example.com/w2 which is shown at example.com but trying example.com/loginhere produces a 404 page after going to the login page - there is no redirection to wp-admin and going to wp-admin just produces another 404!

Have you come across this as an issue?
