Feature Request: provide release versioning

Currently using this library in a project that I plan to distribute across multiple distributions, for ease of integrating it into distribution specific package managers it'd help if this library embraced release versioning.

As that'll allow distros to provide a fixed ABI regardless of what happens upstream.

Your suggestion makes sense, and is something that should have been done a while ago. In the next couple of days I'll do some cleaning up / updating documentation and will release a 1.0.0.
