is it really such a performance hog that is has to be explicitly enabled?

Hard to tell, for small code bases it is negligible, but for larger ones it could make an impact.

Do you think it is still a worthwhile thing to have, or should we abandon it, now that our particular use-case went away?

I don't have strong feelings either way, especially as you can halfway work-around it by using the platform tag trick I described.
