Discussion - Rename "Panel" to folder-view or an equivalent
Raised by the UB community:
Any idea to give another name to ( activedesktop ) panel for avoiding confusion with ( budgie ) panel ? Board ? Frame ? Viewbox ? ... ... But panels are… well… panels, I mean this word is used for decade for long horizontal or vertical « boxes » at border of screen. Here with desktopfolder, it kind of equals KDE’s folderview, why not using this already existing name of concept maybe ?
Thoughts on this discussion point. I can see the user's point of view - there is already the concept of Plank Panels, top-panel, bottom panel etc. Having a 'floating panel' is also a concept in DE's such as budgie and other desktop-environment.
Maybe "Folder-View" is more in-keeping with the "DesktopFolder" concept i.e. a view on the contents of a desktop folder.
mm, I didn't know that connotation about the panels. When you say rename, you mean renaming the word from menus and so, don't you? "create a new panel" and so. In fact, I agree that "panel" is a generic thing, and folder view is something more concrete (a panel with files). I'm thinking about the translation to spanish (in my case).. Folder View is ... strange, I like the concept, in english is not bad, but in spanish, I don't find a good translation. In the code it is called Folder Window.. thinking out loud some possibilities:

... to be honest, not sure what could be the best new name.
I'm not sure it's necessary, at least on elementary as a separate installable app, because I don't think there's anything else referred to as a "panel" in elementary (the top bar app is called Wingpanel but that's a codename only and it's never referred to as that to the user). Also on elementary the "My First Panel" that will soon be popping up again initially should probably make it obvious as to what "panel" refers to.
Maybe this is more something a distro coming with Desktop Folder could change when there are other things called "panels" and there's the possibility for confusion. Maybe you could just clarify it a bit more like calling it "Folder Panel" or something.

Suggest leave this as a discussion point for the moment. If no one chimes in the next week or so, close.
Another suggestion could be just to remove the "Folder" part of "Folder-View" - and call it a "View" - the context is the same ... "view on the desktop folder"

Assuming a change is needed here - lets try not to increase the differences unnecessarily between different distro's with very visible features such as menu options. Plus - would need additional translations
