Add GERS to ExternalIdentifierType

Open bact opened this issue 6 months ago • 2 comments

Global Entity Reference System (GERS) is an ID system for geospatial entities.

There are proposals from operations-related profile to have external IDs for geospatial location. This can be one of their types.

Interesting, I didn't know about this! Ths is great stuff, integrates data from OSM, WD, FB and more. Eg our company is around here: https://explore.overturemaps.org/#18.26/42.670242/23.371655

Here are some other important identifiers for places:

  • Wikidata id
  • GeoNames id
  • OpenStreetMap node, relation, way id
  • GS1 GLN
  • UN LOCODE
  • GNIS and USGS IDs
  • Who's on First ID
  • PlusCode (https://maps.google.com/pluscodes/, https://plus.codes/map)
  • other Gridded (GDDS) systems, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrete_global_grid; eg GeoHash

A hotbed of info on all kinds of IDs is Wikidata. You can

  • look at the "Identifiers" of a well-populated item like https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11299#identifiers (Manhattan), or
  • Find info about any of the above eg as https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?search=property:Who%27s+on+First
  • GERS is described here: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P13219
